Care

A piece knitted by hand asks for very little: air between wears, cool water when it truly needs a wash, and a flat towel to dry on. Each fibre we work with behaves a little differently, so here is how to look after each one. Cared for this way, wool and mohair grow softer, and raffia and cord keep their shape for years.

You will find the material of your piece on its product page, under Product information, and on the care card that comes with every order.

Every piece

Air
Wool, mohair and angora rarely need washing. After wearing, lay the piece over the back of a chair overnight, or near an open window, and it freshens on its own.
Fold
Keep knits folded, flat on a shelf or in a drawer. A hanger pulls the stitches long over time.
Moths
Put pieces away clean, since moths are drawn to worn wool. A cedar block or a sachet of dried lavender in the drawer helps keep them away.
Light
Keep pieces out of strong sun when you are not wearing them. Light fades colour, in wool and raffia alike.

Angora blend

Hoods, beanies, berets, ear-flap hats, baktus and mittens

Wash
By hand, in cool water up to 30 °C, with a gentle wool detergent. Let it soak for ten minutes, then press the water through. Never rub, twist or wring. Rinse in water of the same temperature, since a sudden change can felt the fibre.
Dry
Roll it in a towel to press out the water, then lay it flat and ease it back into shape. Keep it away from radiators and direct sun.
Halo
Once dry, give it a gentle shake or brush it lightly with a soft brush, and the halo lifts again. A little shedding in the first weeks is natural for angora and settles with wear.
Pom-pom
Take off a removable pom-pom before washing.

Kid mohair and silk

Sweaters

Wash
By hand, in cool water up to 30 °C, with a wool detergent free of enzymes, which break down protein fibres like mohair and silk. Skip fabric softener: it coats the fibre and flattens the halo.
Dry
Press the water out in a towel and dry it flat, shaping the body and sleeves with your hands. Never tumble dry.
Halo
When it is dry, a gentle shake lifts the halo. Mohair catches on rings, zips and rough straps. If a loop pulls out, ease it back to the inside with a blunt needle. Never cut it.
Sequins
If sequins are knitted into the yarn, turn the piece inside out before washing and skip the brush.

Merino wool

Cardigans, hoods and hats

Wash
Merino resists odour, so airing it often replaces a wash. When it does need one, wash it by hand in cool water with a wool detergent, and press the water out rather than wringing.
Dry
Lay it flat on a towel, away from heat, and shape it while damp.
Pilling
Small pills can form where the knit rubs, under the arms or at the cuffs. Lift them off with a wool comb or a fabric shaver. They appear less often as the loose fibres wear away.

Raffia

Summer hats and tote bags

Clean
Raffia is a palm fibre and does not like water, so never wash or soak it. Brush off dust with a soft, dry brush and dab marks with a barely damp cloth.
Rain
If it gets wet, pat it dry with a towel, fill the crown or the bag with tissue paper and let it dry at room temperature. No hairdryer, no radiator.
Shape
If a brim loses its line, mist it lightly with water, shape it by hand and let it dry.
Store
Rest a hat upside down on its crown so the brim keeps its shape. Keep bags filled with paper, with nothing heavy on top.

Polyester cord

Mini bags, handle bags and totes

Clean
Cord is strong and holds its colour. For marks, use lukewarm water with a drop of mild soap and a soft brush or sponge, then wipe with a clean damp cloth. Keep it out of the washing machine.
Dry
Fill the bag with paper so it keeps its shape, and let it dry naturally.
Chain and handles
Keep chains and wooden handles dry and wipe them with a soft cloth. When you put the bag away, tuck the chain inside so it does not press into the cord.
Store
Keep it filled with paper, in a cotton bag, out of direct sun. Carried without overfilling, it keeps its shape for years.
